"Love", Mural Festival 2023

Anogyra · Prastio Avdimou · Farmakas

The 2023 edition marked the first implementation of the Love Mural Festival methodology across three rural communities in Cyprus.

Rather than introducing predetermined artistic themes, the process began by listening. Through meetings, observation, creative activities and collective reflection, residents were invited to explore the realities of their communities and imagine possible futures together.

The resulting murals emerged from these encounters, transforming local voices, concerns and aspirations into permanent public artworks.

Each mural was developed through a participatory artistic process that connected community dialogue, creative workshops and collaborative mural-making. The process focused on understanding the identity of each village, the challenges it faces and the values that residents wished to preserve, strengthen or communicate. These conversations informed the themes explored during the workshops and ultimately shaped the visual direction of each mural. Rather than illustrating predefined concepts, the artworks evolved from the collective contributions of participants and were completed by the artist as site-specific responses to each community.

COMMUNITIES

The Love Mural Festival 2023 travelled across three rural communities in Cyprus, with each location developing its own mural through a participatory process involving workshops, dialogue, and site-specific creation.

Anogyra

The mural in Anogyra was inspired by the natural landscape surrounding the village and by the activities that local children identified as their favourite ways of experiencing and enjoying their community. Through workshops and creative exercises, participants reflected on the places, routes and everyday experiences that shape their relationship with the village. The resulting artwork combines elements of the local environment with children’s perspectives, creating a visual celebration of belonging, play and connection to place.

Prastio Avdimou

In Prastio Avdimou, the artistic process focused on exploring and communicating the unique identity of the village. Due to its remote geographical location, participants highlighted the importance of increasing the visibility of the community and sharing its distinct characteristics with wider audiences. The workshops explored the local products, animals, landscapes and everyday life of the village, generating a collective portrait of the village. These elements were brought together within the mural, transforming it into a visual introduction to the community and its cultural and natural assets.

   Farmakas

The mural in Farmakas emerged from the atmosphere, character and emotional experience of the village itself. Rather than focusing on a specific issue or theme, the creative process encouraged participants to respond to the feelings, impressions and sense of place generated through their presence in the community. The resulting artwork reflects this collective interpretation, translating the unique spirit of Farmakas into a visual composition that captures the relationship between landscape, memory and lived experience.
