Description

Improvisation is an experimental workshop that brings together music and body movement, using guided improvisation as the main creative approach. A facilitator leads the process, offering prompts and directions while allowing participants to develop their own responses.

The workshop invites professional and amateur musicians and dancers to explore social and political issues through movement and sound. Participants are given the freedom to experiment with different forms of expression and to develop new ways of communicating with one another.

The workshop explores how participants can develop their own artistic expression while responding to and contributing to the group. Each person brings their own ideas, sounds and movements into the process, while remaining open to the contributions of others. Both the process and the final artistic outcome are equally important.

The workshop has no fixed artistic outcome or predetermined way of working. Participants may bring their own instruments and equipment, such as amplifiers or personal computers. Any object that can produce sound, rhythm or melody can become part of the work.

The programme began in 2012 at the University of Nicosia, Cyprus, and has continued to develop through an ongoing exploration of improvisation, music and body movement.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the program, participants will be able to:

  • explore new forms of communication through artistic practice;
  • develop their own artistic responses while working with others;
  • explore the relationship between music and body movement;
  • gain confidence in experimenting with unfamiliar ideas and approaches.
